Tannum surfboat crew to be tested

TANNUM Turbos' Under 19 recent surfboat racing success will be put to the test this weekend as they take part in the first round of the Australian Premiership Series in Coffs Harbour in predicted big seas.
Team sweep and coach Tony Davis said he was expecting the team to be tested by the massive swell forecast.
"I believe the seas are fairly large down there at the moment, about two metres, which complicates things a bit, but that's what everyone has to face'' Davis said.
Davis said the meet would be the first time the crew would face competition from other Under 19s.
In recent competitions the Turbos have had to battle against open crews, with good results in New Zealand and on the local scene.
"We were up against the best crews in Australia in New Zealand and did well and they dominated at Tannum recently against senior crews,'' Davis said.
Davis recognised the important of doing well at this week- end's meet, with the competition worth double points towards the nationals.
However it will be a big effort with two new crew members untested in big swell.
Although newcommers Shannon Chynoweth and Jason Bedford have raced well with team mates Joel Sherwood and Matt Bellert this year, Davis said the big surf may tell the story this weekend.
"The new guys are untested in the big swell as yet so that may test them a bit,'' Davis said.
Davis also said the team had not had the ideal preparations with one crew member spending the week at Schoolies and others unable to commit to training sessions because of work commitments.
With the big surf of this weekend's event, Davis expected the skill factor to separate the teams.
"It won't just be down to the fastest rowers, skill will have a big role to play because of the surf,'' Davis said.
"I'd rather come second and have rowed well, than win and not have rowed well.
