Tania captures ladies golf title

TANIA Russell was the toast of her clubmates after capturing the Gladstone Ladies Closed Championships A grade gross golf title last Saturday.

Russell finished the 72-hole event with a gross score of 341 ? 13 shots ahead of runner-up Rachael Burke.

Claire Hanson (376) took the B grade title ahead of Jane Brown (392) while Lynda Stephens (422) did enough to secure the C grade honours ahead of Jackie Waugh (448).

Russell made it a double celebration by teaming up with Kara Player to win the Gladstone club's 4BBB Open Day event on Wednesday with BITS pair Sally Haynes and Chris Watt the runners-up. The overall nett honours went to Brown with Stephens finishing runner-up.

Russell will hope her good form continues when she lines up at today's BITS Ladies Open at the Boyne/Tannum Country Club. A hat-trick of titles would make for a memorable six days but Russell must first overcome a quality list of A grade competitors including Miriam Vale pair Lorraine Emery and Kate Ball, BITS' Kylie McCormack and Haynes and Player.

Also on this weekend are the Miriam Vale and Gladstone junior golf opens, to be battled out tomorrow and Sunday respectively.

The Gladstone event has drawn 150 players ? a number which tournament organiser Mark Coughlan is thrilled with.

He said the field was the second largest gathered for any event in Gladstone this year, and the largest junior tournament, and was also one of the club's largest-ever junior opens.

Players from Calliope, BITS, Biloela, Gracemere, Yeppoon, Rockhampton, Emu Park and Bargara will join a strong local contingent to contest the Gladstone event.
