Survey tests waters for a Boyne Tannum pool
A FULLY-FLEDGED aquatic centre and Olympic sized pool is being flagged for Boyne Tannum by the recently formed Operation Splash committee.
Spokeswoman for the steering committee and Calliope Shire Councillor Maxine Brushe said a survey was expected to be circulated in about a month mainly among Boyne/Tannum and Benaraby residents.
Originally the group had considered an Olympic sized pool for the Boyne Tannum area, 'but pools alone are difficult to keep afloat without ancillary infrastructure', Cr Brushe said.
She said the survey was intended to establish what facilities were required by various groups that could be incorporated into the aquatic centre plan.
'The size and cost of the project will depend on what is required by the community and the possibility for interested groups to raise funds,' she said.
Cr Brushe said it was expected the various groups would access any available government funding to go toward the building of the aquatic centre.
She said Operation Splash would be launched with a major publicity campaign to inform residents of the proposal and how participating groups could assist.
No site has been chosen for the pool.
Its location would not be decided until there was some estimate of the size of the proposed complex.
Previously Cr Brushe said that the Boyne Tannum Swimming Club was the second largest club in Queensland comprising about 230 members.
Calliope Council last year supported the proposal by calling all stakeholders together to discuss the project. At that time the council said the project would have to be community driven.
