Surtees surges into early season form
TANNUM Sands A grade coach Graham Appo hopes his star utility Steve Surtees is just beginning to tap a rich new vein of form ahead of tonight's CQ Extended League clash with Valleys at Marley Brown Oval.
Appo and club president David Lowe were in rapture over Surtees' performance in last weekend's narrow loss to Fitzroy-Gracemere, the latter describing it as the Tannum captain's best effort for the club.
Given the standard Surtees has set for more than 10 years with the Seagulls, that's quite a compliment.
'He had a blinder,' Appo said.
'He led the team well last week, I don't think anyone could find fault with the way he played.'
Appo will be hopeful of a repeat performance by Surtees tonight as his side looks to break its premiership drought against a Valleys outfit also chasing its first victory.
'Both sides are suffering a few injuries so it will come down to who wants it the most and who controls the ball,' Appo said.
'We had good training ses-sions this week with a lot of confidence with our ball work on Thursday night ... we're quietly confident of winning.''
After struggling for player numbers over the first two weeks of the competition, the situation now looks brighter for Appo's Seagulls who now have more players on deck and showed great improvement last Saturday night.
Appo will miss the services of workaholic lock forward Luke Clow and Owen Saville through injury and others missing due to work commitments but will start with a fresh 13 ? a luxury he did not enjoy at the season start.
Valleys player/coach Aaron Earnshaw could not be contacted yesterday but is certain to have his troops fired up for a clash he will have identified as being winable by his side despite last weekend's 80-point loss to Gladstone Brothers.
In other A grade encounters, Biloela get the chance to prove their much-publicised resurgence is not all talk when they host Gladstone Brothers tonight.
CQU Norths and Rockhampton Brothers will clash at Browne Park tonight and Fitzroy-Gracemere hosts Yeppoon at Saleyards Park tomorrow.
Tonight at Marley Brown Oval: Valleys v Tannum Sands ? under19 4pm, reserve grade 5.30pm, A grade 7pm.
