State Eisteddfod host calls for business help

GLADSTONE businesses will soon be called on to support the city in the hosting of the Queensland Eisteddfod.

Chair of the Gladstone Organising Committee for the Queensland Eisteddfod, Noel Wootton says planning for the upcoming state Eisteddfod was swinging into full gear.

"The event is a very complex one and the committee are currently meeting on a weekly basis to ensure the event is successful.

Mr Wootton said there were more than 200 categories spread over vocal, choral, dance, speech, instrumental and drama.

'For instance we expect at least six choirs of up to 80 people per choir to compete in the event,' he said.

The Queensland Eisteddfod will be held in Gladstone in April next year.

Mr Wootton said they were confident they would be able to cover all the costs.

'We are working to a budget of $70,000 to stage the event,' he said.

'In the next couple of months we will be approaching businesses in the region to sponsor various aspects of the event.'
