Sparks? finals chances on thin ice
SPARKS' slim hopes of a CQ Extended League men's hockey finals spot remain intact despite Saturday's 2-0 loss to Park Avenue Brothers at Rigby Park.
Sparks rest in fifth spot, two wins behind Meteors, with two matches remaining.
If Sparks can defeat Meteors this weekend and repeat the dose against Southside United, also at home, the following weekend, they may usurp Meteors' grip on fourth spot.
However, they would rely on Meteors, who have a game in hand, to lose all three of their remaining encounters against Southside United, Sparks and Frenchville Rovers.
With the Rovers yet to win a match this year, it would take a major upset for Meteors to drop that game, especially with so much resting on the result.
CQU Wanderers, on 23 premiership points, have already wrapped up the minor premiership and lead Park Avenue Brothers 17, Southside United 16, Meteors 12, Sparks 8 and Frenchville Rovers 0.
Meanwhile, in Gladstone women's A1 competition, Sparks picked up just their sixth premiership point of the season following Saturday's 1-1 draw with Souths.
Meteors lead the charge on 34, followed by Souths on 21.
