Souths end season on a high after win

SOUTHS went into the Gladstone Softball Association under-12 season break on a high after defeating Telfords for just the second time at Memorial Park last Saturday.

Although results have been close between the only two sides in the competition throughout the season, Telfords have generally held the upper hand, winning six of the previous seven encounters between the sides.

However, Souths made it two from the past three with a hardfought 6-4 win last Saturday.

Souths' under-14/16 outfit followed with a victory of their own in their opening fixture on Saturday, defeating Telfords 2 9-1.

Souths' excellent fielding was a key feature of their victory with Courtney Stewart, who produced several clever plays at second base, leading the way.

Blake Gibbs was one of Telfords 2's best, his work on the pitcher's mound impressing on the day.

Souths then doubled up to play Telfords 1 but could not replicate their earlier victory, going down 11-2.

Although Telfords 1 largely controlled the match, the margin could have been closer if not for an excellent fly ball take by Stacey Crawford in the outfield.

Crawford caught the towering hit off the bat of Kate Ellacott to deny Souths getting several runners home.
