Small field to chase Calliope Gold Cup
A SMALL field will contest the 95th Calliope Gold Cup Class 6 Plate event but that is not expected to deter spectators from today's five-race program at the Calliope Racecourse Reserve.
Only four horses have been entered into the main event but the day has otherwise drawn healthy fields from throughout Central Queensland and is traditionally a popular meeting on the region's racing calendar.
Gates open at 11am with the first race, the QTIS Maiden Plate, to be run at 1.30pm.
In addition to the racing, there will be four lucky race book draws and best dressed lady and best hat competitions.
A bar will be operated and refreshments available while southern races will be broadcast.
Although the Gold Cup meeting is normally buoyant with festive season cheer, there will be a bittersweet feel to this year's event as it is the first in 20 years which recently-departed secretary/treasurer Ivan Bode has not overseen. Bode was a passionate proponent of the race day, his efforts largely resulting in its survival when its place on the Queensland racing calendar came under threat.
Race times ? 1.30pm QTIS Maiden Plate (1000m); 2.12pm QTIS Maiden Plate (1000m); 2.47pm Class 2 Handicap; 3.25pm Class 4 Handicap; 4.05pm Calliope Gold Cup Class 6 Plate.
