Seagulls overjoyed by Surtees re-signing
TANNUM Sands Rugby League Club A grade coach Graham Appo has been buoyed by the news stalwart Steve Surtees has re-signed with the Seagulls.
A member of the club's green jacket brigade, awarded to players with 10 years' service, Surtees' signing is welcome news for Appo as he looks to increase player numbers in the lead-up to next weekend's opening round of trial matches.
'We still need numbers in A grade and reserve grade but at this stage I'm not worried,' Appo said yesterday.
'We've been getting 41 players to training and that's with blokes missing through shift work.
'It's a long road but I knew that before I took the job. It's not a one year job it's a long process but with the talent we've got here, I think we'll be strong again.
'Tannum's had a couple of lean years but if we work hard we'll get back to where we were a few years back.'
While he is yet to name a captain, Appo conceded Surtees was a major candidate.
He also said the icing on the cake would be the return of another veteran, second-rower Chris Larsen.
'As far as I know, Chris has retired but I'd love to have him back,' Appo said.
'I think a few of the boys are hanging back and seeing what happens but that has a domino effect ... I've got to get them off their couches and on to the training fields.'
He said fellow coaching staff members Darren Laffin (reserve grade), Grant Whitfield and Allan Morgan (under-19s) were also working hard and the club would field a strong under-19s outfit.
The club is also relishing in the news that the Tannum Sands Hotel and Bill Robertson Toyota have agreed to be the Seagulls' major sponsors.
