Seagulls coach calls for more recruits

TANNUM Sands A grade rugby league coach Graham Appo has called for possible recruits to 'stop sitting on the fence' and either commit to the club or notify officials they would not play this season.

Appo's frustration was yesterday evident as he announced that he would have, at best, 13 fresh players for tonight's trial against Gladstone Brothers with at least four players having to back up from reserve grade to fill the bench positions.

'We've got (possible) A grade players still sitting on the fence and waiting to see what happens, but that's not helping them and it's not helping us,' Appo said.

'They're saying they've got the itch to play ... well they should scratch it and fall one way or the other. You're either gonna play or you're not.'

Appo said he named a starting 13 for tonight's encounter at after Thursday night's training session but already two players were in doubt, unable to notify the Tannum coach until this morning as to their availability due to work commitments.

The Seagulls coach was worried that a repeat of last weekend's hammering by Valleys was on the cards if he could not get enough fresh legs on to the paddock.

'This is the second year that Valleys have trained together and Brothers have trained together a lot more than that,' he said.

'Brothers are missing some players but they've still got the core of a very strong side and have some good numbers.

'If we can put up a good stand against Brothers, I'll be happy. If we can put some points on the board and push them hard, that'll be great.'

In this weekend's other A grade clash, Valleys will look to continue their impressive pre-season form but face their toughest challenge against a strong Wallabys line-up determined to put last weekend's loss to Brothers behind them.

Tonight at Marley Brown Oval: Tannum Sands v Gladstone Brothers ? 4pm under-19, 5.30pm reserve grade, 7pm A grade. Tomorrow night: Valleys v Wallabys ? 4pm under19, 5.30pm reserve grade, 7pm A grade.
