Saints to play on holy ground

AFL Capricornia powerhouses BITS Saints will get the chance of a lifetime in May when they play the North Mackay Saints at the Gabba.

The Saints meet their rivals from the strong Mackay league as a curtain-raiser to the AFL game between the Brisbane Lions and Richmond match on May 21.

BITS and North Mackay will be playing as part of the Community Club Challenge which recognises the importance of country football in Queensland.

Both clubs have been dominant in their respective competitions during recent seasons with BITS winning four consecutive AFL Capricornia premierships up to 2003, while North Mackay scooped the pool to win three AFL Mackay flags from 2001-03.

One problem for the clubs is who is going to wear the Saints jumpers with AFL Queensland to decide the issue within the next couple of weeks.

In more local AFL Capricornia news, Gladstone duo Dale Sparkman and Deek Kanther have been selected in the Southern Country under 18 team to line up against Northern Country in Cairns.

Kanther was selected after a solid game in Capricornia's seven point loss to Mackay in the under 17 clash in Rockhampton last weekend.

Sparkman, who recently moved to Brisbane, was selected on past performance as he is still eligible for the Queensland Country team.

The game will be played as a curtain-raiser to the Wizard Cup game between Melbourne and the Brisbane Lions.
