Road runners get early start on Friday

GLADSTONE Road Runners officials are hoping to draw triple figures when early birds line up in Friday's annual Harbour Festival Fun Run.

The event, which will get under way on Flinders Parade, near the wa- terfall, at 7am, caters for participants of all ages and abilities.

Fun Run organiser Charmaine Thompson said the event traditional- ly drew about 80 competitors but she hoped to draw even larger numbers having sent notice to schools in a bid to draw interested students.

'It's nice to see a lot more involve- ment in sport and people thinking about fitness and health,' Thompson said.

'It's also good to just get the kids out there and doing something that's refreshing and it also gives them a sense of fulfilment when they try something they haven't tried before.'

Thompson said the event had drawn a great response from spon- sors with $750 prizemoney, prizes and trophies up for grabs.

However, she emphasised that the run was about participation as much as it was about serious competition for keen athletes.

Participants have the choice of completing a 3km or 10km course and Thompson said the shorter option was a good walking distance for those not keen to run.

Registration will be taken at Flin- ders Parade at 6am and the cost is $10 adults, $6 juniors or $20 family with proceeds raised going to Gladstone Lions Club.
