Rivals square off

THE CLUBS may be the same, but the teams will be vastly different as last year's grand finalists Yaralla and The Glen square-off in today's Gladstone A grade one-day clash at Sun Valley Park.

A new-look The Glen went down by eight wickets to an impressive Brothers in week one and are sure to be going hard for a win today.

The Glen's strength appears to lie in their young batting line-up, with Liam Kirk, Aaron Bachmann, Michael Gosschalk and Brett Rogers all getting starts last weekend.

They will be hoping at least one or two of these four could make a sizeable contribution today.

But Yaralla, under new skipper Troy Webster would want to start their new season with a bang.

Like their opponents, Yaralla have undergone some changes over the off-season and go into this clash without a number of last year's team.

The loss of leading batsman Chris Stitt will hurt, but the Redbacks can still call upon a number of stars.

Skipper Webster is the reigning Gladstone Cricketer of the Year and his brother Grant has been recently named in the Central Queensland team for the upcoming NQ championships.

This promises to be an intriguing match-up and the first 10-15 overs are going to be crucial.

At Bunting Park, Calliope need another 234 runs, but have all 10 wickets in hand to win against BITS.

Calliope's task is an achievable one considering the Bunting Park wicket played very well on day one of the two-dayer last weekend.

With an assortment of all-rounders in their line-up, Calliope can bat right down to 11 and if their not out openers Ken Wogandt and Peter Ferguson get off to a good start this total is not beyond them.

But the Islanders have a good allround attack led by the consistent Vaughn McDonald and Steve Austin, while Brad Webber and Mick O'Brien have the ability to take plenty of wickets.

Lower-grade fixtures. Reserve Grade (Today) BITS v Calliope (BITS), Brothers v The Glen (Palm Drive 2) B Grade (Tomorrow) The Glen 1 v The Glen 2 (Sun Valley), BITS 1 v BITS 2 (BITS), Calliope 2 v Yaralla (Calliope), Calliope 1 bye.
