THE FUTURE continues to look bright for Gladstone volleyball star Rhiannon Tooker after her fine form for the Australian girls youth team in the Phillipines last month.
Rhiannon, 15, played a key role for the Aussies who produced their best-ever performance at the Asian Youth Championships to finish in sixth spot.
Australia won two matches in the Phillipines, far surpassing their previous efforts at the Asian championships. Rhiannon was a starter for the Aussies in every match and was rapt with her own game.
'Considering an Australian team had never won a set, winning two games was a top effort,' Tooker said.
'It was great to do so well and I was pretty happy with the way I played.
'The weather was so hot over there and it takes it out of you, so to play well was hard work.'
Rhiannon's form was so good against her Asian opponents that she earned selection for next month's Australian women's team training camp in Brisbane.
Her selection for the camp came as a big shock.
'I was really surprised that they have invited me to the camp, it will be a great experience for me,' she said.
'It is highly unlikely I will make the national team, but to be recognised is something special.
'I can't wait to get down there and train with the girls.'
Even the loss of her luggage for two days didn't affect Rhiannon's enjoyment of her international tour, something she is looking forward to again if given the chance.
'To travel internationally and play volleyball is very special, I have made a lot of great friends and it would be nice to tour with the team again next year,' she said.
Judging by her rapid progress in volleyball, I am sure she won't have to wait too long.
