Representative teams face tough ask

GLADSTONE representative cricket teams face a tough task in upsetting strong Rockhampton outfits if they are to capture Central Queensland Championships crowns this weekend.

Rockhampton sides were unbeaten in both the open and under-21 divisions during the earlier championship rounds and are favoured to secure the double in Gladstone this weekend.

As the top side in each division, Rockhampton will play semi-finals against fourth-placed Central Highlands in the open division and Callide/Dawson in the under-21s and is strongly favoured to win both. Gladstone's open side, which finished in third spot, is at near full-strength and must defeat Callide/Dawson on Saturday to reach the final.

The under-21 side, which finished second, must overcome Central Highlands to stay alive for Sunday's decider. Central Queensland Cricket secretary Greg Michel hoped Gladstone cricket fans would take the time to view the action.

"There should be some good cricket played on the weekend, especially in the finals on Sunday,'' Michel said.

"I'd expect Rockhampton and Gladstone to meet in the finals in both divisions but you never know what will happen.''

Matches get under way at 10am on Saturday and 9am on Sunday. Open matches: Saturday ? Rockhampton v Central Highlands Clinton No.2; Gladstone v Callide/Dawson Clinton No.1. Sunday ? final, winner game 1 v winner game 2 at Clinton Oval No.1; play-off for 3rd, loser game 1 v loser game 2.
