Refinery an environmental finalist

THE Comalco Alumina Refinery (CAR) has been lauded as one of the best environmental performers in Australia following its nomination in the Banksia awards.

CAR has been announced as a finalist in the highly acclaimed Banksia Environmental Excellence Awards in the category, sustainable development leadership in the minerals industry.

CAR general manager operations Trevor Peters said it was the site's overall approach to environmental issues that had secured them the nomination.

'It's recognition for the team here and all that we have achieved,' Mr Peters said.

'I think it has been our holistic approach to things that have been successful.'

Mr Peters added that the communication techniques of the site had also added to their environmental performance.

Mr Peters said open communication with the community around the CAR site had helped all involved understand the importance of a sound environmental performance.

'We have excellent communication with the people from Yarwun Targinnie which I think does help,' Mr Peters said.

Mr Peters will now travel to Adelaide in June for the announcement of the award and is confident of getting a result.

The category CAR is vying for is awarded to a company in the minerals industry that has demonstrated leadership, commitment and excellence in contributing to Australia's sustainable future.
