Refinery alkali fallout damages parked cars

SOME Comalco Alumina Refinery (CAR) employees cars have been damaged by the plant's alkali fallout.

A Comalco spokesperson said the alkali fallout, a common part of the alumina refining process, was a re- sult of the plant's commissioning process.

"As we commission and bring the plant into stable operations we are experiencing some air-born al- kali on the site and occasionally, de- pending on weather conditions, in the car park area,'' the spokesper-son said. The damaged vehicles will be repaired by Comalco, with most to be cut and polished and the more severely damaged vehicles needing to be repainted.

"We are working to repair any damage to employees vehicles and making modifications to the plant to reduce this in the future,'' the spokesperson said.
