Rape trial jury hung

THE jury for the rape trial of a Gladstone man was discharged yesterday because the members could not unanimously agree on a verdict.

Hoane Joseph Kahu, 21, pleaded not guilty last week to three counts of rape of a 15-year-old girl behind the Old Post Office building in Yarroon Street on March 6 this year.

During the trial last week Gladstone District court heard Kahu admitted to having consensual sex with the girl and provided a DNA sample that matched semen found on the girl's dress.

However the jury was unable to reach a verdict yesterday. Senior Crown Prosecutor Justin Whalley said regardless of how much time they were allowed, the jury said they would not be able to come to a unanimous decision.

The case has been listed for a new trial in the sittings commencing October 17.
