THE BETTING machines will have their work cut out for them today when locals line up to place their bet on the winning horse for the Melbourne Cup.

The race which stops the nation has keen punters excited, with a large number of people lining up since Sunday to place their bets.

It won't matter whether you are at the local races, at a function or at work, everyone will stop and cheer on the horse they want to win.

TAB agent Alison Patterson said this time a year was exciting, yet crazy for the TAB.

She said since Sunday the machines had not stopped, with the locals placing their bets on the big race.

'After the Sunday Mail published a $1 bet, streams of people came flooding in to place it,' she said.

As of 2pm today, locals will glue their eyes to the television to watch the big race.

Alison said the TAB would have extra helpers behind the counter and in the betting rooms.

'The more staff will enable placing bets to be more efficient,' she said.

Natalie Peut will be heading to the track today to check out the fashions and the social scene on Cup day.

Find out the inside story, according to Natalie, in The Observer tomorrow.

There will also be two pages of colour social photographs from the day.
