Police are investigating claims by a 15-year-old girl that she was raped in the Gladstone Central Business District in the early hours of Sunday morning. The alleged incident occurred some time between 2am and 3.20am, at the rear of the Old Post Office Building on the corner of Goondoon and Yarroon Streets.
Detective Inspector and Regional Crime co-ordinator Mick Niland said yesterday the youth was initially in the company of two friends but became separated from them after an argument.
He said the alleged rape occurred in the 20 minutes she was separated from her peers.
The juvenile was then taken to Gladstone Hospital suffering small abrasions on her knees and bruising to the left elbow. Det Insp Niland said police had interviewed the girl's two friends who said they hadn't seen anything.
"The girl is traumatised as you would expect, but she is assisting police with their enquiries,'' he said.
At the time of the incident the alleged victim was wearing a pink dress.
Details of the alleged offender will be released later in the week.
Police have appealed to anyone who thinks they may have seen anything to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
It is the second serious sexual assault claim in Gladstone's CBD in the past 10 months.
Last week 29-year-old Troy Damien Williams was sentenced to two-and-a-half years jail for an attempted rape in Goondoon Street in June last year.
An 18-year-old woman fought him off and ran to a local hotel after she was dragged into playground equipment near the National Australia Bank.
