Outrigger juniors start with a bang

CANOE Point Outrigger Club juniors got their season off to a bright start with solid performances at the recent AOCRA Grand Prix Regatta meet at Tannum Sands.

The under-14 Nemo OC6 line-up of Ben Turner, Madison Hogan, Alana Burraston, Hayden Warren and Angela Baker, steered by Deb Bennetts, won gold in the sprint event and bronze in the marathon.

The club's other under-14 crew, 'Bruce' also took medals from both events, claiming silvers in both the sprint and marathon.

The crew consisted of Drew Collins, Hayley Beaumont, Brandon McKenzie, Grace Nichols and Emma Rigney and was steered by Christina Gilritchie.

The under-12 Tiger Sharks ? Bianca Bennetts, Tamara Birleson, Hayden Collocott, Jacob McLean and Hayley Beaumont ? almost pulled off a winning double, winning gold in the sprint and silver in the marathon.

The Tiger Sharks were steered by Darren Croston and Bennetts. Also showing good form were fellow under-12 outfit Barracudas who not only claimed silver in the under-12 sprint, but proved competitive in the under-14 division, finishing fourth in the under-14 marathon.

They also finished fourth in the under-12 marathon. Barracudas' lineup consisted of Kimberley Warren, Jamie Birleson, Megan Hogan, Kris Chalmer and Mitchell Olds with BJ Gapes performing steering duties.

Officials have invited seniors and juniors interested in a social paddle to meet at the Canoe Point Outriggers Club on Island Esplanade, Boyne Island (behind Breezes Cafe) between 9am-10am on Sunday.
