CHRISTMAS is not only a time to open presents and over-eat, its true purpose is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.
Star of the Sea's Jim Billing said the Christmas Eve midnight mass was a huge event for the church each year.
'You will find a lot more people at- tend the mass, even though they do not go to church each week,' he said.
'The mass allows the people to have the true meaning of Christmas which is the birth of our Christ.'
Jim said the mass allowed others to find the true meaning of Christmas.
'It would be great to see them all back at the church on a regular basis,' he said.
'We have the midnight mass on Christmas Eve and early in the morning.'
The Shaw family goes to church each week.
Mother-of-five Maryanne Shaw said they went each week to listen to God's word.
'I have been attending church since I was born, my parents were strong be- lievers in being at church every Sun- day,' she said.
'I have done the same with my chil- dren, they have all been through the church as babies.'
Maryanne said the church was an important part of their families lives.
'My children once a month attend children's liturgy,'' she said.
'We don't go to the midnight mass because the kids are asleep, but we are up early to make it to the 6.30am mass.'
