Matthew strikes gold again

IT'S hard enough being a Queensland champion for your age group in one sport, let alone two.
Well, I will tell you something ? I know someone who is and his name is Matthew Strike.
The talented Chanel College student added the Queensland Secondary Schools 14 years cross country title last week to his state triathlon crown won back in April.
That's two gold strikes in fivemonths. Pardon the pun. Competing against 53 of the state's best, Strike covered the testing 4km distance in a time of 13 minutes, 51 seconds.
It proved a time good enough to win by just two seconds, as Peninsula competitor Thomas Briggs made a late shot for the title. Strike was rapt with what is his second Queensland cross country title win in just three years.
'It is great to win the title again, but I almost lost the race because he (Briggs) came at me late,' Strike said.
'I thought I had him beat, but to his credit he almost got me.'
A polite and well-spoken young man, Strike spends his life mixing school with training and competing.
It takes a lot of dedication, but Strike believes he reaps the rewards.
'To be up there you have to train hard and it is great to win when you put the effort in.
'It is a bit tough at times, but I love sport and wouldn't have it any other way,' he said.
As for the future, Strike is building up for the upcoming athletics season, so expect to see his name featuring in these pages again.
