Looking for glory

PREMIERSHIP glory awaits at Rigby Park this afternoon as the Gladstone District Hockey grand finals are decided.

Traditional rivals Souths and Meteors meet in the A1 women's decider, while Meteors and Sparks go head to head in the men's clash.

In the women's clash, minor premiers Meteors will be looking to continue their dominance of the competition.

But they won't get it all their own way against a Souths team buoyed by their upset win in the major semi-final.

Meteors have a nice blend of experience and youth with Jill Matheson, Carol Pericles, Sue Rayner and Bianca Nathan.

Coach Roy Smith has mapped out a plan and believes that if his team can follow it they can win.

"We are confident of winning and if the girls can work together well, we should go a long way to doing that,'' Smith said.

But Souths have their fair share of talent led by captain Lisa Green, Karen Graham and Lexie Armitage.

Souths coach Ruth Armitage is happy with the balance of her team and believes they are ready to fire.

"We have a good mix of talent and our younger players are keen to do well,'' Armitage said.

The men's decider will be a cracker, with both sides always keen to play when they come up against one another.

Sparks have had the upper hand lately, finding form after an unsuccessful Extended League campaign.

Sparks coach Jason Burns has his boys cherry ripe for this clash.

"We have trained well and are confident of performing well, it should be a great game,'' Burns said.

But Meteors sent a reminder to their rivals with an impressive comeback to win last week, and have the talent to win.

Meteors mentor Brett Ryan was rapt with the comeback last week and is hoping that result translates into a big performance this week.

"We were happy with last week's game, we rediscovered the level which is needed in grand finals,'' Ryan said.

Grand finals will also be fought out in the lower grades, with games starting from 1pm.

Grand Finals, all at Rigby Park. 1pm: A2 men: Regulators v Crusties, A3 women: Meteors v Souths. 2.20pm: A1 men: Meteors v Sparks, A2 women: Strikers v Sparks 3.40pm: A1 women: Souths v Meteors
