Locals take on the best of state league

FOUR Gladstone district junior rugby league players will face the best players from throughout the state at the Queensland secondary schools under-15 state titles in Cairns this week.

Tannum Sands High trio Daniel Dobbin, Zac Beers and Larry Chapman are joined by Chanel College's Matt Lockyer in the side in which Biloela's Lyndon Law will line up.

Law is one of just two 14-year-old players to make the side which opens its campaign against Met West tomorrow and will be coached and managed by Tannum Sands High teachers Danny Keenan and Russ Maynard respectively.

Dobbin has won a spot in the starting side at second-row while forwards Beers and Chapman and utility back Lockyer are expected to start off the bench in tomorrow's clash.

Last year the Capricornia team reached the finals to finish fourth overall of the 12 teams.

Keenan said the coach was confident this year's outfit would also be tough to beat.

Four members of the Capricornia side already boast scholarships with the Brisbane Broncos but those who have yet to impress could get that chance in Cairns.

'There's a chance to win sponsorships with talent scouts like Arthur Beetson (Sydney Roosters) and Cyril Connell (Broncos) getting around,' Keenan said.

Meanwhile, the Gladstone High open side and Tannum Sands under-15s will look to keep their unbeaten records intact when the fourth round of the Gladstone district secondary schools competition resumes today.
