Locals star in volleyball championships

GLADSTONE State High School trio Rhiannon Tooker, Michelle Bridges and Nicole Just starred as Queensland took out the under-16 national volleyball championships in Perth last Friday.

Queensland went through the preliminary series unbeaten and took out a tough final in four sets against rivals South Australia.

It was a special win for the Queenslanders who made it three back-to-back championships.

The win was a great reward for Tooker who rejected a last minute invitation from the Australian senior team to be part of their China and Japan tour.

Tooker was the Maroons' top player, her height and experience proved too difficult to stop.

Bridges was another of the Maroons' stars, with her consistency a major feature of her success.

She was named alongside Tooker in the honorary Australian under-16 team which was named at the conclusion of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Just also played well, with the talented youngster impressing many judges on court.

Just, who mixes volleyball and basketball commitments, certainly was rewarded for her dedication as part of the championship winning team.
