Lamberton seals deal for United ladies team

A VIRTUOSO display from young gun Sophie Lamberton booked United's maiden Gladstone Soccer Federation ladies grand final spot on Saturday night.

Lamberton, 14, scored two goals as United accounted for defending premiers Clinton 3-1 in the preliminary final at Sun Valley Park.

The victory secures United's first ever place in the ladies decider and Lamberton was rapt to play her part.

'To win is great, it was nice to score a couple of goals and win,' Lamberton said.

'All the girls wanted to win today so we could go to Marley Brown Oval, I can't wait to be part of it.'

With the last grand final spot on the line, preliminary finals are often entertaining games as both teams strive to avoid elimination.

This one was no different with a frenetic opening as both teams scored inside the first three minutes.

United got off to the best possible start when Lamberton scored inside the first two minutes.

But Clinton hit back like a champion side to level things just a minute later and had the better of the first-half.

They were unlucky not to take a lead into the break after hitting the woodwork twice in as many minutes.

Just as they did in the firsthalf, United started well after the main break and went back in front when Tina Lawson slotted home a Lamberton pass to make it 2-1.

And Lamberton wrapped it up, slotting home a rebound to seal United's place in next week's decider against BITS at Marley Brown Oval.
