Ladies tee up for Open honours

A QUALITY field of Gladstone and Miriam Vale district competitors will battle for honours at the Miriam Vale Ladies Open golf championships today.

Miriam Vale's Lorraine Emery will look to utilise her home course knowledge and is one of the favourites to take out the A grade title.

Emery is out to defend her 2004 title when she held out Capricorn Coast's Gail Moony who is not backing up for this year's event.

Also rated a chance is Emery's club-mate Kate Bell who captured the Rockhampton Open title last week, despite struggling for form leading into the event.

Gladstone's Anne Fenton is also a strong contender for the A grade title alongside club-mate Gloria Chapman.

Bell, as spokeswoman for the event, said 80 players would compete in three grades, all of which were expected to be tough contests.

She said the course was in good condition and should be conducive to good golf play.

"We'll look to have a good day out with some good golf and have a lot of fun,'' Bell said.
