THIS year is shaping up as a massive one for the Gladstone Brothers Rugby League Club which is on the hunt for success under new A grade coach Matt Jones.
Jones, a former club stalwart who coached the Brethren in tandem with Brian Hansen in 2001, returns to the top role after Hansen's other commitments left him unable to continue as coach.
Hansen will still be involved with the club however as a coaching director for all grades, while Jones is looking forward to taking the senior reins and cannot wait for the season to start.
"We are very keen to do well in 2005 and are excited at our prospects this season,'' Jones said.
Jones also mentioned the Brethren would begin its preseason campaign on Tuesday January 18 at Chanel College and encouraged all players to turn up. "All players new or old are welcome to come down for training,'' he said.
"We want as many as possible to turn up as it is not long before the trials kick off.
"It is important we get a good base to work from and have a strong start to our season.
"We want to get everyone at the club training for a big 2005.''
In other club coaching news, Tim Moore has been named as the reserve grade mentor, while Aaron Lindenburg is in control of the under-19 team ? much to the pleasure of Brothers president Paul Smith . "We are very happy with the coaching line-up we have for this season,'' Smith said.
"Matt definitely knows what it takes to coach at the level, while Tim and Aaron should do a fine job.
"The club has been blessed by fine coaches in the past. We have even had five internationals as coaches including Chris Close and Phil Daley and we are very confident that our luck continues in this area.
