Gymnasts to benefit from full time coach

THE GLADSTONE Gymnastic Club is gearing up for a big 2005 after the appointment of new full-time coach Grant Onions.

Onions, 22, joins the club as a full-time coach from Emerald and is overseeing the club's best men's artistic gymnasts along with the Kinder Gym and Gym Fun programs.

He has settled into the club like a glove and is loving life in the Harbour City.

'I have really enjoyed it so far, everyone has welcomed me into the club and it has been great working with the gymnasts,' Onions said.

Onions comes to the club with vast experience in the sport having represented Queensland on three occasions before turning his attention to coaching.

'I was always interested in coaching and has been a fairly natural progression ever since I finished competing,' he said.

One of the main reasons for Onions' switch to the club was the opportunity to work with respected head coach Anna Turetschek.

'Mrs T (Turetschek) has been one of Queensland's top coaches, before she came along there was not much around.

'There is no doubting her influence on the sport in Queensland,'' he said.

Onions also mentioned the facilities of the club, including the new foam pit which cost $50,000 to install, were sure to benefit local gymnasts well into the future.

'The facilities in Gladstone are fantastic for juniors and the new pit is going to help our with their confidence. Furthermore there are spots available for any juniors who want to give Gymnastics a try.

For more information phone the club on 4972 0300.
