Gropers legend in great form

LEGENDARY Gladstone Gropers swimmer Don Jones continued his amazing form at the Yeppoon Aussi Masters swim meet last weekend.

Jones spearheaded an amazing Gropers assault which resulted in 40 first placings.

In addition to magic individual form, the Gropers took out the hotly-contested G and A Ireland trophy for the highest average points scored.

Jones broke the state record for the 50-metre breaststroke on the way to five wins.

As a result of his fine form over a long period, Jones is now the top Aussi Masters 70-74 age group swimmer in Australia. Ian Carrick was also tearing through the water, breaking two state age group records in the 100 and 200-metre breaststroke.

Like Jones, Carrick finished with five firsts. Red-hot form was also shown by Narelle Phillips, Prue Oswin, Lisa Witherspoon, Ken White, Frank Brunetto and Bill Brandli who scored five firsts each.

Phillips produced a clean sweep of the backstroke events scoring four of her five wins, but showed enough capability to go forward by winning the 100-metre freestyle.

Oswin showed her versatility to win in three different strokes, but was topped by the jack-of-all-trades pair of Brunetto and Brandli.

Brunetto and Brandli have no weakness in the water and were proud of their wins in all four strokes.

We will have to come up with a new stroke to test the pair, while White and Witherspoon were in unbeatable form.
