Golfer Brad Burns wins Australian Club Pro

FORMER Gladstone golfer Brad Burns is smiling after winning the Australian PGA Club Pro Championship for the third year in a row at Royal Pines Resort on Monday.

Burns who is the club pro at the Murray Downs Golf Club in Swan Hill, shot a record 54-hole score of 16 under par to win the $65,000 tournament by five strokes.

South Australian professional Mike Sprengel finished second, while Wollongong pro Neil Speirs ended third.

Speaking to The Observer on his way home yesterday, Burns said his nine-under par 63 on day one laid the foundation for his third successive title.

``I played pretty well all three days, but the 63 on Friday (day one) had me really in the perfect position,'' Burns said.

``I hit the ball so well and even though a couple of guys got close, they couldn't reign me in which was great.''

The record win continues Burns' affinity with the Royal Pines course which was again in magnificent condition for the tournament.

``Royal Pines is a great course and I always play well there.

``I reckon if they ever held the Australian Open there, I would be a chance,'' he said.

Burns collected just under $12,000 for winning.
