Gladstone sailor impresses in Governor?s Cup

TALENTED Gladstone sailor Tom Barker has returned to Australia after an impressive display at the recent Governor's Cup regatta in America.

Barker formed part of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) crew which finished the prestigious event in eighth position.

He is the son of Port Curtis Sailing Club members Brad and Maryke Barker and competed on AFR Midnight Rambler in the 2004 Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

Eighth spot is a very creditable achievement by the young CYCA crew in what is a challenging event to win.

The Governor's Cup draws 12 boats from across the world.

This year's fleet included boats from as far away as Finland, New Zealand and of course the United States.

It is held at Newport Beach in California, where the waters promote close and exciting sailing.

Barker is expected to line up for his second Sydney to Hobart on Boxing Day.
