Games torch to miss Central Queensland

GLADSTONE and Central Queensland will not get a chance to carry the Commonwealth Games torch when it comes to Queensland in January and February.

However, Gary Zupan of Gladstone Road Runners said he was not particularly disappointed the torch was not coming to Gladstone.

'I didn't know anything about the itinerary ? I suppose if there had been talk it was coming here and it didn't many people might have been disappointed,' he said.

Member for Gladstone Liz Cunningham has called on the state government to review the proposed Commonwealth Games Torch Relay Route to include Gladstone and Rockhampton.

Mrs Cunningham said Central Queensland contributed significantly to the state's economy but had also produced a large number of top athletes.

A spokesman for the Queensland Premier's Department said there had been a number of requests from the Central Queensland region for the torch to pass through the area.

'Mrs Cunningham and the others should direct their request to the Games Committee which is organising the run,' he said. Mrs Cunningham said the State Government should support the requests for the torch visit.
