Five pay phones to be removed in Gladstone

THE fight is on to retain our public payphones. Member for Hinkler Paul Neville said he was ready to fight to retain public payphones not only in the Gladstone region but throughout Australia.

"I urge residents who notice stickers on any public payphone targetted for removal to contact my office,'' Mr Neville said.

"Pay phones are vital to people around Australia and particularly those in the less populated areas.''

Five payphones have been targetted for removal in the Gladstone region and they are all in Gladstone.

Testra Countrywide area manager Sandra Williams said the five locations were Wistari Street in Clinton, Hanson Road, Derby Street, Hugh Street in South Glad-stone and Kent Street in West Gladstone.

"Every year we review how much our public payphones are being used," Ms Williams said.

"We only target those payphones that aren't being used on a regular basis.

"If we get consumer feedback to retain the payphone then we do keep the payphone at that site.''

Ms Williams said if residents wanted to keep a particular payphone that was about to be removed they could phone 1800 011 433, or drop a letter into the Telstra Countrywide office in Gladstone.

Staff would forward it on to the relevant area.
