Fierce squash tournament ahead for veterans

By GREGOR MACTAGGARTmactaggartg@gladstoneobserver.com.au

A NUMBER of the region's top squash players will converge on the harbour city for this weekend's inaugural Choice Petroleum Gladstone Veterans Squash Tournament.

Over 70 players from as far as Rockhampton and Yeppoon are expected for the two-day event starting on Saturday.

Tournament organiser Brian Jarvis can't wait for the action to begin.

'It should be a fantastic weekend, this is the first time the tournament is being played and we are expecting a strong turnout,' Jarvis said.

'We have some top-notch players coming and the action should be fierce.'

Jarvis named Gladstone's Sue Davis as a major contender in the ladies.

'Sue is a top player and will prove difficult to beat in the strong women's division,' he said.

He added Rockhampton star Glen Ward would be tough to beat in the men's field, but said any one of five or six players could win.

'Glen is a strong A grade player who is coming down in Rocky and should go very close to winning in what is an open field,' he said.

'There are really any number of guys who could win it.'

Jarvis said he would still take nominations for the tournament up to tomorrow lunchtime before doing the draw. If anyone wants to play in any one of the divisions, they can phone Brian on 4972 2633.

You need to be 30 or over to play in the women's event and over 35 to be part of the men's field.
