Ferguson Park race meet turfed

LOCAL racing fans will have to wait until next year to get their fix of Gladstone racing with tomorrow's scheduled Ferguson Park meeting cancelled.

The Gladstone Turf Club (GTC) was told by Queensland Racing's Col Truscott the meeting was cancelled because there were not enough nominations for two races on the five-race program.

The decision is a blow to the GTC which budgeted on a strong turnout for tomorrow's program, according to secretary Margaret Ironmonger.

'It is a big blow for us, we were hoping for a big day to finish off the year,' she said.

"Every race day is a big one for us to bring funds in through the bar, canteen and TAB, so to have this day cancelled is disappointing.

'Those finances really help us with the maintenance of the course and the assorted machinery, so it hurts us in the pocket as a club.''

Today's TAB race meeting in Rockhampton appears to have an impact on the harbour city club, with the money on offer in the beef capital too tempting for trainers and owners.

Ironmonger is confident the next meeting set down for Ferguson Park, the popular Magic Millions Day on January 8, will kick off the new year in style.

'The Magic Millions Day is always quite popular, so hopefully we can start off the new year with a good day,' she said.
