Driver taken into custody after accident

A MALE driver was taken to hospital under police escort yesterday after an accident at the Boyne Island turn-off on the Benaraby Road.

A green Mitsubishi Magna was seen driving erratically prior to hitting a light pole and careering through the intersection about 3pm.

The driver was taken into police custody and drug utensils were later removed from the car by police. The driver was then transported to Gladstone hospital under police guard.

It is believed he suffered minor injuries.

Gladstone Police Sergeant William Johnson said police had received several phone calls from concerned motorists relating to the car prior to the accident.

Sergeant Johnson said while police were contacted by several people regarding the car, it was not being followed or chased by police.

The car knocked over a light pole about 100 metres back from the intersection, before hitting a second car and eventually coming to rest in the in- bound lane of the intersection.

Traffic had to be diverted around the accident while the car was removed.
