Doman caps Maroons? title win

FORMER Gladstone softball star Amanda Doman capped a fine week after Queensland won the Australian Fastpitch Softball Championships on Saturday in Victoria.

Not only did the Maroons edge out rivals NSW 2-1 in a tense grand final, but Doman was awarded the esteemed Midge Nelson Medal for the championships' Most Valuable Player (MVP).

It was a welcome bonus for the Athens silver medallist who starred for Queensland during the week-long event.

Doman displayed supreme form with the bat, as her ability to hit at key moments illustrated, while her performance in the field was exemplary.

But it was the final win which would have pleased Doman the most, with Queensland bouncing back from a 4-1 loss in the first semi-final in style.

They accounted for Victoria 7-0 in the preliminary final to set up a grudge final and neither side gave an inch.

Queensland opened up a 2-1 lead at the end of the first inning and with the championships' best pitcher Kelly Hardie on their side, the Maroons never relinquished their advantage ensuring jubilant celebrations as the team was awarded the Gilleys Shield.
