Dancegoers have a ball

THEY dressed to the nines and danced as if feet were going out of fashion at the Mayoral Engine Room of Industry Industry Ball on Saturday.

Yesterday Gladstone Mayor Peter Corones said the ball was a major social and fundraising success, with the auction raising just $50 short of $14,000 on the night.

"People were tremendously generous when you consider there had been such things as tsunami fundraisers, the Bring Dan Home campaign and the Walk of Hope happening very recently,'' he said.

Funds raised on the night are to be directed to the PCYC and Gladstone Festival and Events.

Festival and Events general manager Judy Whicker said it might be some time before the organisers knew what profits remained.

However, she said she expected there would be some financial help available for her organisation after the calculation were completed.

She said unfortunately there were only about 200 takers for the 300 available tickets for the ball, possibly because of other things on at the same time and the recent charity appeals.

"But everybody enjoyed themselves immensely and had to be persuaded to leave in the end or they'd still be there,'' she said.
