Dahl and Kelly take division title



IAN Dahl and Elaine Kelly are the Port Curtis Division champions in the State Mixed Pairs competition. The draw was completed at Calliope Country Bowls Club on Saturday and Sunday with 12 teams nominated. The Division and spectators offer their congratulations They will now meet the Bundaberg winners to tend for the Bundaberg/Port Curtis District championship. The winners will then contest the Zone contest against the Central Queensland on the way to the State Title.

Kelly and Dahl defeated Helen Potter and Ivan Stiller in round one and Marie and Ray Williams in the semi finals. The final was completed at 6.10pm under lights.

The upset of the competition was the win by Marie and Ray Williams when they defeated past winners Margaret and Alan Spence in the semi finals. The husband and wife team were the least experienced pair in the competition. They won with a single and a three in the last two ends.

RESULTS: Round 1 Kay Dodds Luke Yerkovich defeated Mel Lohmann John Francis 31-4; Marie Williams Ray Williams won on a forfeit from Karron and Bert Hunt; Nancy and Wacko Arnold defeated Bev Damke and Brad Spencer 20-7; Margaret and Alan Spence defeated Julie Irving and Steve Buffier 24-19. In round two Elaine Kelly Ian Dahl defeated Helen Potter and Ivan Stiller 37-11 ; Iris Baxter and Maurie Givan defeated Dora Lowe and Bill Halter 28-6/ In the semi final Marie and Ray Williams won over Margaret and Alan Spence 29-13 Elaine Kelly beat Iris Baxter Maurie Givan 26-16.

In the final Elaine Kelly and Ian Dahl were victorious over Marie and Ray Williams 21-11 The Division thanks Calliope Country Bowls Club for doing a great job of hosting the event, games director Maurie Givan, umpire Coralee Moorecroft and all who assisted in any way.

The nominations for the Col Wenitong Memorial Trophy closed with all nine Division Club nominating this year.

There will be a preliminary round to decide the eighth team in the draw.

This competition requires club teams of seven - a singles player, a team of pairs and a team of four and is scheduled for October 1 and 2. The trophy is currently held by Boyne Tannum Bowls Club. Further details as they come to hand. Veteran bowls

Latest word is that Norm Hick is in the rehabilation ward at St. Andrews Hospital in Brisbane We wish him and all bowlers off the green, a speedy recovery.
