CALLIOPE Shire Mayor George Creed has been rewarded for a lifetime of community service with an Order Of Australia Medal (OAM).

Councillor Creed has been Mayor of Calliope Shire since 1995 and before that was Deputy Mayor from 1976.

Although Cr Creed was honoured to receive the award, he was very humble about it.

'I was slightly embarrassed about the award because I have always had good people around to support me,' Cr Creed said.

Cr Creed was grateful for support from the electorate.

'I would like to thank the electors of Calliope Shire for their support.'

Cr Creed's philanthropic nature has benefited several community organisations.

Hosting the annual 'The Old Station Fly-In and Air Show' on his property since 1992 for the past 14 years has been a great benefit.

'The number one recipient has been Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service and almost $100,000 has been raised with fundraising,' Cr Creed said. There will be no air show this year due to some much-needed repairs.

'There will be no air show this year due to major refurbishments, next year it will be back on and Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile will be present to open it,' Cr Creed said . Other community groups to receive support from the Air Show were The Royal Flying Doctor Service, Queensland Aerial Ambulance Service and local scouting groups.

'It is a wonderful honour to receive this award and I am very grateful to all the people who have supported me,' Cr Creed said.
