Crash takes teen's life

"JUST the other day we were telling her how much we loved her, how special she was, how compassionate and caring she was and how beautiful she was ? she knew that... she knew how much she meant to us, and now we're just devastated.''

Those were the heartfelt words of Kathleen Pollard, whose 18-year-old daughter, Karla, was killed instantly when her car and a semi-trailer collided at the intersection of Gladstone-Benaraby Road and the Bruce Highway yesterday about 8.30am.

"She walked out the door this morning and she's not coming back,'' Mrs Pollard said yesterday as she held back the tears.

Karla's Mazda sedan and the semi-trailer collided when she turned right at the Benaraby intersection, heading north on the Bruce Highway.

The truck driver was not injured.

Yesterday Mrs Pollard remembered her teenage daughter as having achieved more than most people her age, beginning a traineeship with Calliope Shire Council just a few months ago, and studying accounting at university.
