City triathletes make it a local winning double

GLADSTONE triathletes Michael England and Petro Kuiper made it a local double with powerful wins in the Tuckers Cycle Inn/Sportsco race series at Rydges Capricorn Resort on Sunday.

England continued his fantastic recent form with a hard-fought start to finish win in the men's event, while the ever-consistent Kuiper was a strong winner in the women's event.

The talented England got off to a flying start and was the first to come out of the choppy 750 metre swim leg.

He cruised along the 24km ride before powering home in the 5km run to win in a time of 1 hour, 12 minutes and 27 seconds (1:12.27) ahead of Rockhampton Australian age rep Wayne Clifford and home- town triathlete Peter O'Shaughnessy.

Kuiper showed why she is the most dominant female triathlete in the Central Queensland region with a comfortable two minute win in the women's race.

Kuiper was never seriously troubled in front and covered the long-course distance in a fine time of 1:24.07.

It was a case of the two Sonya's behind Kuiper with great rivals Sonya Murphy (Rockhampton) finishing in second place and Emu Park's Sonya Gillies in third.

Fellow Gladstone triathletes John Staley, Mike Dunstan and Brian England also made the trip up to Yeppoon to take part in the popular event.
