City tipped to host Origin relayto join inOrigin relay

GLADSTONE may not get to host this year's batch of State of Origin rugby league heroes but will still share in the spirit in the build-up to this year's interstate series.

Queensland Rugby League this week announced that the Queensland side would visit Rockhampton during its preparation for the Origin One match at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium on May 25.

While Gladstone fans will have to travel if they want to meet this year's stars, heroes of years past are expected to be in the harbour city on May 19 as part of the inaugural Legends of Origin relay.

QRL Central Division executive officer Rex Zeeman said details about the event were still scarce but the relay would be in Gladstone from 9am to midday on May 19 followed by an in-store appearance at Harvey Norman at 1pm.

Zeeman said the entourage would stay the night in Gladstone, opening the way for more activities, possibly a fundraiser for junior rugby league, before departing for Bundaberg the following morning.

He said a promotion for the David Peachey Foundation could also be incorporated into the celebrations.

Peachey, the veteran Cronulla Sharks NRL fullback, started the foundation in a bid to promote the development of young indigenous rugby league players in rural and regional areas.

It was also announced this week that Gladstone would host the QRL Central Division open carnival on June 11 and 12.
