Charity walk called off

WHEN Lisa Acton organised a charity walk to aid the Mater Hospital oncology ward where her father receives treatment for cancer, she thought Gladstone would get behind her.

Yesterday the world record attempt was called off because of lack of public support, despite extensive media coverage and promotion.

'We've given it four full days and got less than 200 people when we were expecting a few thousand,' Raymond Lewis said.

'With the number of people in this town who walk and the chance of a $1500 holiday we expected a lot more. It's just a bit disappointing so much effort was put into it and we couldn't get the support.'

Mr Lewis said he had experienced similar problems at other local events.

He thanked those who had attended the initiative, but said he and Ms Acton had become disheartened by the amount of knockbacks.

'All we were asking for was for people to come down and walk for a couple of minutes.'
