CENTRAL Queensland were squeezed out of top place on bonus points but proved their mettle when defeating the champions in yesterday's final day of the under16 Queensland Junior Cricket Intra-state Championships in Brisbane.
Chasing eventual winners Wide Bay's imposing 10-251 off 55 overs, CQ responded in style, passing their target in the 53rd over before ending their innings on 9-266.
Preston White, a Rockhampton junior who also plays in Gladstone fixtures for Yaralla, belted 113 off 123 deliveries to complete a successful campaign which resulted in his inclusion in the Queensland under-16 side.
He was joined in a maroon cap by former Gladstone player Shaun Kelly, now playing in Rockhampton, who top-scored with 77 in the previous day's victory over Brisbane North.
In yesterday's win, Rockhampton's Pat Flamank (40 off 22 deliveries) and Mark O'Keefe (29 off 56) contributed to the win as did Jarvis Black who claimed 4-39 off nine overs.
Also proving handy with the ball were White (2-44 off 10) and Gladstone legspinner Michael Slatter (1-33 off 11).
The win gave CQ four wins from five starts and 42.9 points, pushed into third spot by Wide Bay (45) and Metropolitan South West (43.1).
In Wednesday's victory, CQ reached 9-196 in reply to Brisbane North's 6-192 with Kelly and Rockhampton pair Ken Litchner (30) and White (23) contributing with the bat.
Rockhampton's Gene Shaw (233 off eight) and Dominic Mills (113 off five) bowled well for CQ as did Gladstone pair Rowan Murray (1-25 off 10) and Slatter (1-36 off 11).
