Aspiring designer launches swimwear

AT JUST 21, Mary Maltabes is showing Gladstone youngsters they can achieve anything, hav- ing just established her own fash- ion label.

Mary said after growing up in Gladstone, her love of art and fashion became a career path.

"I've always loved fashion and after living in Gladstone until I finished Year 12, I decided to move to Brisbane to study fash- ion,'' she said.

Mary said after a three-year TAFE degree she began working for a dancewear company in Bris- bane, then decided recently to es- tablish her own label "miss- mary'', specialising in swimwear.

"I wanted to gain some indus- try experience first, but now I've decided to launch my own label and through my final year of col- lege I focused on swimwear, so that's the line I'm going to devel- op,'' Mary said.

Having entered in last year's prestigious Retailers Association of Queensland Fashion Awards, Mary said she decided to register her own company. "I don't see it as a big thing, I'm just taking baby steps,'' she said. Mary said while she was still in the initial stages of launching her range, she hoped to sell her line to boutique stores in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and "possibly Gladstone''.
