APC Logistics Brisbane to Gladstone Multihull Yacht Race

The 2016 APC Logistics Brisbane to Gladstone Multihull Yacht Race starts at 11:10am on Good Friday 27th March at Shorncliffe. The Multihull Yacht Club Queensland is pleased to announce that the start is to return to the vicinity of the newly refurbished Shorncliffe Pier. This has been made possible with the co-operation of Marine Services Queensland and the organizers of the Bluewater Festival.

This new arrangement will allow the thousands of spectators on the shore to easily view the start of this famous sailing event. The Lord Mayor will be present to officially open the new Pier, and has been invited to fire the starting gun from the pier end. There will also be commentary describing the start of the Multihull race.

This year will see a slightly smaller but very competitive multihull fleet with at least 5 yachts capable of winning Line Honours. Spectators watching the start will receive an information sheet on the Multihulls that are racing. This form is also available from the MYCQ website (www.mycq.org.au). The yellowbrick tracker can also be viewed on the MYCQ website.

Morticia will be defending its title after last year’s clean sweep, winning line honours and all handicap divisions.

Motor racing legend Tony Longhurst will be challenging on the red catamaran The Boat Works. In last year’s race Tony was up with the leading pack when he had to withdraw after forebeam damage.

Top Gun is considered by some as the favourite with good form racing down south. Top Gun was the unofficial line honours winner in 1988 but was ineligible due to sponsorship rules. In last year’s race, like The Boat Works, she was amongst the leading pack when they also had to withdraw due to mainsail issues.

The 2010 and 2013 line honours winner, Boss Racing, has had a makeover and could also be a potential line honours winner and will be looking to add an OMR handicap win to the trophy cabinet.

Fantasia can’t be overlooked as they will be mixing it with the leading yachts and will be in there with a chance of a line honours and handicap win.

The only Gladstone Yacht in the race, No Problem a Schionning Waterline design, will be looking for a handicap win. The other Schionning Waterline, Renaissance will be looking for at least 20 knots of breeze to give them a handicap win. Last year the light winds on Easter Saturday put them out of contention.

Last year Hasta La Vista damaged a prodder which prevented them from carrying a spinnaker and this year they will be looking to show what this yacht can do.

The Multihulls are expected to start finishing Saturday afternoon.
