Anglican church speaks out against MP's immigration policy

FEDERAL Member for Dawson George Christensen's calls for immigration restrictions to halt the 'rise of Islamism' has sparked backlash nationwide.

On Thursday he detailed his concerns about the 'rise of Islamism' in Australia, and called for tighter restrictions on immigrants from countries where 'there is a high prevalence of violent extremism and radicalism'.

"I am concerned about the rise of Islamism in this country and those who are willing to commit violence in the name of that ideology," he said.

"And I think we should consider some tighter controls on borders, such as restricting immigration from countries where there is a high prevalence of violent extremism and radicalism.

"Their (immigrants) views are widespread in the countries from which they come and we must ask if they are diametrically opposed to the values that helped shape our nation and underpin our society and our culture, why did they choose to come to Australia in the first place?"

The next day, the Anglican Parish of Gosford shared a post on Facebook, which has now been like 3100 times, that called on Australian's to celebrate diversity.

"George Christensen has said that people fleeing some of the most violent places in the world do not "share" our values," the post read.

"Well, I certainly hope they don't share George's values.

"Unlike Mr. Christensen Australian values include caring for the vulnerable, marginalized and outcast.

"The Australian way of life has for fifty thousand years been characterized by incredible diversity.

"This man's values seem to include bigotry, exclusivity, and marginalization of the vulnerable: we certainly do not share those values either."

The post was signed 'Fr Rod'.
